Bruno Munari (Milan 1907-1998)

Considered one of the greatest protagonists of 20th century art, design and graphics. In his early twenties he joined the second-generation Milanese Futurist Movement and from here began his multifaceted activity in the fields of painting, design, didactic experimentation, kinetics, graphics, advertising and photography. He took part in the collective exhibitions of the Pesaro Gallery, the Venice Biennale and the Quadrennial Exhibitions in Rome and Paris in the 1930s. In 1993, he exhibited his 'useless machines', mechanical contraptions studied in their aesthetic ca-rather than in the past. From 1934 to 1936, he devoted himself to abstract painting. In 1948, together with Monnet, Dorfles and Soldati, he founded the MAC (Movement for Concrete Art). During the 1950s, he created concave-convex sculptures (1949-1965), positive-negative paintings, and experimental three-dimensional models (Composizione al quadrato, Sculture da viaggio and Strutture continue), through to visual experimentation with polarised light. In the following years he devoted himself to critical research and experiments with xerography.
